The Grist and Saw Mill was first owned by the co-founders of New Salem, John Camron and James Rutledge. The mill is located over the banks of the Sangamon River. The water from the river powered the grist mill to ground grains and corn into powder, and the saw mill used for cutting logs into long sheets.
